Privacy notice in accordance with Art. 13 GDPR with declaration of consent

Dear participants,

As part of the "Social Modulation of Imitative Behaviour" project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), automatic imitation, i.e. the subconscious reflexive tendency to imitate the behaviour of another person, is being investigated. This serves to understand which factors influence people's imitative behaviour and to what extent.

In the course of this, we, researchers at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Institute of Management and Technology, Cognitive, Social and Economic Psychology Unit, are conducting this study on imitation behaviour. We would be delighted if you would be prepared to support our research project by taking part in this study. Your participation will make an important scientific contribution.

Data protection is of particular concern to us. We process your personal data (hereinafter referred to as "data") in accordance with the legal requirements and would like to do this in a transparent manner. We would therefore like to briefly explain to you in the following privacy notices which data we process and for what purposes and on what legal basis this is done. You will also receive information about contact persons and your rights in connection with data processing.

Purposes and legal bases of data processing:

  1. Provision of a website, log files

As soon as you visit our website, we store so-called log files. These record your IP address, the date and time you accessed the page, the URL you accessed, the URL you last visited (referrer URL), the browser you are using and its version, and the version of the operating system you are using. The log files are generally stored for a maximum of 90 days.

We use this data to prevent misuse of our website and to enable you to have a trouble-free and optimised visit to our website. The legal basis for this processing is § 3 S.1 No. 1 NDSG in conjunction with Art. 6 para. 1 sentence 1 letter e) EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in conjunction with Section 3 para. 1 sentence 1 no. 10 Niedersächsisches Hochschulgesetz (NHG)

  1. Participation in theresearch project

We use your demographic data (age, gender, nationality and handedness) and response times as part of the implementation of our research project for the following activities:

Collection of data sets using an online reaction test to answer scientific questions about the extent to which social factors affect the imitation behaviour of people.

We collect demographic data about you in order to be able to scientifically substantiate the significance of the research results.

The data will also be made available to Ms Teresa Nguyen, a doctoral student at Leuphana University Lüneburg, for her own analysis and preparation of her doctoral thesis.

This data processing is carried out for the purpose of pursuing the aforementioned research questions and on the basis of your voluntarily given consent. The legal basis is therefore Art. 6 para. 1 sentence 1 letter a) GDPR.

  1. Participation via panelprovider, pseudonymisation

We send the reaction test to different groups of people via different channels. If you take part in the study via the panel provider "Prolific" (Prolific Academic Ltd, 483 Green Lanes, London N13 4BS, United Kingdom), you will receive a code generated by us at the end of the reaction test. This code confirms that you have taken part in the reaction test. The code does not refer to your individual person, but to the survey round. If you return this code to the provider as confirmation of your participation in the study, Prolific will use the code for its own purposes, e.g. to pay you compensation. You can find Prolific's privacy notice at

https://prolific.notion.site/Participant-Privacy-Notice-6b6cb4f60a674d96a1433bff6412215b

We do not receive any further information from the provider beyond your Prolific ID. We do not link your Prolific ID to our reaction test so that we cannot re-identify you.

The legal basis for pseudonymisation is Art. 6 para. 1 sentence 1 letter c) GDPR in conjunction with Art. 5 para. 1 letter e) GDPR.

  1. Archiving

For archiving and review purposes of the research work, demographic data (age, gender, nationality and handedness) and response times will be archived via the technical systems of the University of Lüneburg during the research project and beyond for 10 years in accordance with the guidelines of the German Research Foundation (DFG) on good scientific practice. Access to this data is restricted exclusively to researchers in the project group and only takes place on an ad hoc basis if there are reasonable doubts about the quality of the research work or the data and based on your voluntarily declared consent. The legal basis is therefore Art. 6 para. 1 sentence 1 letter a) GDPR.

  1. Anonymisation

Your IP address, the date and time of page access, the URL accessed, the URL you last visited (referrer URL), the browser you are using and its version and the version of the operating system you are using are anonymised as soon as the research purpose permits this. This technical data is stored in log files separately from the content of the reaction test and your demographic data (see section 1 above). A link between a Prolific ID (see section 3 above) and the other data is not stored. As soon as the log files are deleted, it is therefore impossible to link the other data collected to you personally. The legal basis for anonymisation is Art. 6 para. 1 sentence 1 letter c) GDPR in conjunction with Art. 5 para. 1 letter e) GDPR.

  1. Publication and use in teaching

Publications that we publish as part of the research project do not contain any personal data. Publications (e.g. dissertations, publications in specialist psychological journals) only contain anonymised data that do not allow any conclusions to be drawn about your person

Even when used in university courses and for Bachelor's and Master's theses, students only have access to anonymised data.

  1. Consentdocumentation

If you have given your consent to the processing of your personal data, your consent will be recorded and stored in machine-readable form together with the exact time it was given. We store this data for the legally required documentation of your consent.

The legal basis for this data processing is Art. 6 para. 1 sentence 1 letter c) GDPR in conjunction with Art. 5 para. 2 and Art. 7 para. 1 GDPR. Art. 5 para. 2 and Art. 7 para. 1 GDPR.

If you do not consent to the processing of your data, this will not have any negative consequences for you. If you do not pass on our code for the survey round (see section 3 above) to the panel provider, you may not receive any payment for your participation.
